Fairfield drops season opener to Adena

LEESBURG — From start to finish, the Adena Lady Warriors controlled every aspect of the 2023-24 season opener Wednesday night, as the host Fairfield Lady Lions fell to the visitors from the Scioto Valley Conference, 53-19 at Grandle Gymnasium.
The first game of the 2023-24 season didn’t go the way new head coach Jennifer Blue and the Lady Lions wanted it to go, as Adena got off the a 6-0 start to force the home team Lady Lions to call a timeout with 6:49 left in the opening quarter. From there, the six-point lead quickly turned into an 18-0 run for Adena with around 3:00 left in the opening quarter.
The run of points for AHS saw Marly Halcomb, Emma Garrison, Kiera Williams, and Sydney Ater all contribute to the scoring against Fairfield, including Halcomb scoring six straight points in the run for a then-15-0 lead with 4:09 on the first quarter-clock.
Halcomb led all scorers with 14 points, followed by Garrison with 13 points. Other final scoring totals for AHS included Day (eight), Ater (eight), Williams (four), Kamryn Sowers (four) and Caroline Corcoran (two).
Fairfield’s first points for the season were scored on a jumper from Faith Donley, as she grabbed her own rebound and scored the points on her second chance effort.
Adena ran away with the lead by the time the first frame ended, leading 29-8. In all, Adena had five players score points in the first quarter with Williams scoring two, Halcomb with 11, Corinne Day with three, Ater with eight and Garrison with five.
The same first quarter also saw Adena make six 3-pointers with two by Halcomb, two from Ater and one each by Garrison and Day.
Fairfield’s eight points in the first quarter saw Donley with four, Kassi Miller with two and Jaeden Drury with two.
FHS was held to three points in the second quarter, with Remi Moon making a free throw and Donley scoring one basket.
Adena’s second frame saw them add 16 points to their lead, taking a 45-11 halftime lead.
Adena made two more 3-pointers in the second frame (Halcomb, Day) and had other baskets made by Williams, Sowers and Corcoran.
The second half had a running clock with Adena scoring eight points in the third, and they were scoreless in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Lions scored four points in each of the final two quarters with Kelsey Clark making a basket and two free throws in the third, and another bucket in the fourth frame for six of those final eight points scored. Donley scored a basket in the fourth frame.
Fairfield was led in scoring for the game by Donley with eight points, followed by Clark with six, Miller and Drury with two points each and Moon with one point.
Adena improves to 1-0 overall, and Fairfield falls to 0-1 this season.
Next for Fairfield is a home Southern Hills Athletic Conference game on Monday, Nov. 27 vs. West Union with a JV start of 6 p.m.
