Basketball Report: Lions gain SHAC win; Wildcats battle in loss

Lions have dominant win against West Union

Scoring enough points in the first half to earn their Southern Hills Athletic Conference win on Tuesday night, the Fairfield Lions defeated the visiting West Union Dragons in convincing fashion by a 67-27 score.

Fairfield scored 17 points in each of the first two quarters, while West Union was held to a seven-point first quarter and six points in the second, giving the Lions a 34-13 lead at halftime.

The next two quarters saw the Lions score 21 in the third and 12 more points in the fourth, while the Dragons scored eight points in the third and six points in the fourth quarter.

Fairfield’s leading scorer was Griffin Friend with 24 points, making three 3-pointers, six two-point baskets and he was 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. Also in double figure scoring was Brody Smith with 12 points, collecting his points off one 3-pointer, four two-point baskets and he finished 1-of-2 from the free-throw line.

Also for the Lions, scoring included Logan McIntosh with nine points as he made a 3-pointer and three two-point baskets, while teammate Chase Newman totaled seven points, collecting his points with a 3-pointer, one two-point basket and he finished 2-of-2 with his free-throw attempts.

Dane Hodson ended the game with six points off two 3-pointers, Caleb Barrera finished with five points as he sank two shots from the field and was 1-of-2 from the free-throw line, and rounding out the scoring was Quentin McIntosh with four points off two baskets.

As a team, the Lions finished with eight 3-pointers, 18 two-point buckets and they were 7-of-11 from the free-throw line.

For West Union, their leading scorer was Gavin Jarvis with 11 points. As a team, the Dragons made two 3-pointers, seven two-point baskets and they finished 7-of-14 from the free-throw line.

The win moves the Lions to 3-0 overall, and they are also 3-0 in the SHAC. The Dragons are now 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the SHAC.

The Lions will play again Tuesday, Dec. 17 in a SHAC game at Peebles.

Wildcats fall by 9 to Felicity

The Whiteoak Wildcats played competitive basketball in their non-conference game Tuesday at Felicity High School but were unable to return home with a win, as they lost to the host Felicity Cardinals, 70-61.

Felicity led the first quarter 13-10, then kept the advantage in the second after outscoring the Wildcats 23-16 for a halftime time lead over Whiteoak 36-26.

In the second half, the Wildcats scored 16 points in the third and 19 points in the fourth frame. Felicity added 17 points in the third and 17 more points in the fourth quarter.

Whiteoak was led in scoring by Brady Brandenburg with 18 points, as he made seven two-point shots from the field and he was also 4-of-5 from the free-throw line.

Sawyer Blair and Zander Roades each finished with 13 points. Roades totaled three two-point baskets, one 3-pointer and was 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. Blair had five two-point baskets and was 3-of-5 in his free-throw attempts.

Aiden Crowe scored 10 points for Whiteoak with three two-point buckets, and he finished 4-of-7 in his free-throw shots.

The rest of the WHS scoring included Zach Igo with three points, Jackson Tedford with two points and Jonah Michael with two points.

As a team, the WIldcats totaled 21 two-point baskets, one 3-pointer and they were 16-of-23 from the free-throw line.

The Cardinals were led in scoring by Jordan Blevins with 25 points (seven two-point baskets, three 3-pointers, two free throws), and next was Zander Marlow with 19 points (four two-point baskets, three 3-pointers and two free throws).

The loss moves Whiteoak to 2-4 overall, and they are 1-1 in the SHAC this season.

Next for WHS is a game Friday, Dec. 13 on the road in SHAC action against the Fayetteville Rockets.
