Summer reading starts in June; community invited to ‘color our world’ at the Hillsboro Library

As school ends and the calendar flips from May to June, the Hillsboro Library is gearing up for its busiest (and most fun) time of the year: Summer Reading.

“Summer Reading is probably when most people think about coming to the library,” said children’s library manager Gabrielle Pitzer. “And this summer is going to be extra fun because our theme is all about crafts – our favorite library activity! When planning this summer, we really tried to come up with crafts that the whole family would enjoy.”

The programs which will be aimed more at kids and families include: “Messy” Art Day (Thurs., June 12, 4-6 PM), Stamp-Making (Thurs., July 10, 4-6 PM), and Food Sculptures (Thurs., July 24, 4-6 PM).

“This year’s theme is especially fun,” said circulation manager Sarah Davidson. “‘Color Our World’ is all about arts and crafts--and we love arts and crafts here at the library.”

Davidson highlighted a few programs about which she is particularly excited. “We’ll have an ‘Art-y Party’ on Thurs., June 5 from 4-6 PM. Patrons of all ages are invited to come create some art and enjoy some art-themed games.”

She added that the library will also host their annual comic con on Saturday, June 21. “This is always a big event,” she added. “We’ll have over 20 different unique activities, ranging from crafts, to trivia, to scavenger hunts. And, of course, our all ages costume contest.”

Davidson added that the comic con was supported by the State Library of Ohio with federal funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

In July, the library will also host its annual Local Author Night, and then on, July 24, patrons can attend “Book Tastings.” She said, “Tweens through adults will be invited to go to stations around the library where we’ll have different book-themed mini parties set up.”

“Basically,” she continued, “they’ll be able to ‘live’ in the selected books for a while. Each ‘book tasting’ will have a snack and an activity or craft.”

The books are: Twilight, Gone with the Wind, The Chronicles of Narnia, Little Women, and The Lord of the Rings.

Summer Reading will end with a Color Carnival, which will include bingo, a scavenger hunt, and kids’ mini golf.
