St. Mary's Episcopal Church Concert Series Begins with James McLaughlin Organ Recital

St. Mary’s Episcopal Church announces their 2013-2014 Concert Series: “Music at St. Mary’s”. Kicking off the series will be former Hillsboro resident, James McLaughlin, who will present an Organ Recital on Sunday, October 20 at 3 p.m.
Jim was born and raised in Hillsboro, the younger son of Bob and Virgie Lee McLaughlin. He graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1964 and served as organist at Hillsboro Church of Christ during his high school years.
After receiving his Bachelors of Fine Arts degree from Ohio University majoring in voice and organ, he taught vocal music and choir in the Zanesville City Schools for 31 years. Jim has served churches as music director or organist in Athens and Zanesville.
Jim is an adjudicator for voice, piano and choir events for the Ohio Music Education Association. He owns a music conservatory in Zanesville offering lessons in piano, organ and voice.
In addition to serving as Director of Music at Central Trinity United Methodist Church in Zanesville, he directs the Zanesville Civic Chorus. This year is their 84th annual “Messiah” Oratorio performance.
Jim serves as the booking agent for the Zanesville Concert Association and as assistant director to the Y-City Barbershop Chorus. Members of his church choir traveled to New York City this past May to perform the premier of Mark Hayes’ Requiem Mass at Lincoln Center with a special chorus made up of singers from seventeen states. This recital, as every concert in the series, is free and open to the public. Attendees are invited to a reception following the recital.
Two concerts will be presented in December. The first is the 15th Annual Southern State Singers Christmas Concert on December 15 at 2:00pm. On December 22, the program, “A St. Mary’s Christmas” will be presented by musicians of St. Mary’s.
April 6, 2014 at 2:00 pm, will be A Lenten Concert, presented by St. Mary’s Musicians. Southern State Singers will return on April 27 at 2:00pm for their Spring Concert. Hillsboro High School Symphonic Choir has begun a tradition of presenting a concert in the beautiful acoustics of St. Mary’s. This year their Spring Festival Choral Concert will be our final concert in the series, on May 18 at 7:00 pm.
