SSCC welcomes Mongolian folk band Oct. 19

Southern State Community College will welcome the Mongolian folk band AnDa Union 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, in the Edward K. Daniels Auditorium on SSCC’s Central Campus, 100 Hobart Drive, Hillsboro.
The workshop performance is free and open to the public.
AnDa Union will visit Southern State as part of a multi-city tour coordinated by Arts Midwest, a nonprofit organization which promotes creativity, nurtures cultural leadership, and engages people in meaningful arts experiences in the Midwest region.

AnDa Union was formed in 2003 in the Xilingol Grassland area of Inner Mongolia, a semi-autonomous region of China. AnDa Union plays traditional Mongolian instruments including the horse-head fiddle or tsuur, the three-holed flute or maodun chaoer, and Mongolian versions of the dulcimer, zither, lute and mouth harp.
The main singing style performed by AnDa Union is khoomii, commonly referred to as throat singing, a traditional type of Mongolian overtone singing, which replicates the sounds of nature. Much of their repertoire is comprised of long songs, or urtiin duu, a traditional style of Mongolian folk music that evolved from melodies sung by nomadic herders. Anda means “good friends” in Mongolian.
As part of their tour, AnDa Union also will perform a concert 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at The Murphy Theatre, 50 W. Main St., Wilmington. Tickets are $10 at the door. For more information about the Oct. 22 event, please call the box office at 937-382-3643 or boxoffice@themurphytheatre.org.
