SSCC to host speaker on homestead gardening

Southern State Community College will present guest speaker Dona Grant on the topic of homestead gardening 6 p.m. Thursday, May 6, in the Learning Resources Center on the college’s South Campus, 12681 U.S. Route 62, Fincastle. The event is free and open to the public.
Grant lives on a 27-acre family farm near Winchester with her husband. They raise heirloom orchard fruits, kitchen herbs, vegetables and a wide variety of berries for their own consumption as well as for sale. She has written books on homesteading, food preservation and gardening.
During the May 6 event, Grant will discuss the basics of homestead gardening, including an introduction to various gardening methods such as lasagna gardening, container gardening, raised bed gardening and conventional gardening. She will also discuss soil-building techniques, seeding and transplanting tips, insect and disease control (natural, organic and chemical), and harvesting and storing ideas.
