Southwest Corn Growers meet March 9

By
David Dugan-
I recently read an article in a newspaper that I know several people in southern Ohio have been subscribing to for years.  The paper comes from Columbia, Ky., but has always covered several things, including tobacco. For those of you who do not receive this paper, I think this article touches on some things that we have been hearing about and dealing with for a few years now.
The article is quite long, so I will give you a few highlights and you can check it online at http://thefarmerspride.com if you want to read the entire article, written by Sharon Burton, while she was attending the Kentucky Corn, Soybean and Small Grain Growers Associations in Bowling Green, Ky.
The article starts out like this.  Steve Kopperud didn’t mince words as he warned Kentucky’s corn, soybean, wheat and pork producers of the pending doom if they don’t actively combat an anti-agriculture message gaining strength in the public arena.
Kopperud is a consultant and lobbyist with Policy Directions, Inc., a Washington, D.C.-based company that represents several ag related organizations. Kopperud discussed issues in other states involving animal rights groups and how things have been handled. He discussed how farmers and producers have sat on their butts doing nothing about it. He then warned that if farmers and producers did not take an active role, they might be looking for jobs because they would not be farming.
If you do not have the Internet and would like a copy you can call the Farmer’s Pride at 800-489-9454.

Southwest Corn Growers

The Southwest Corn Growers annual meeting will be held on March 9 at 6:30 in Leesburg, at the fire hall. The dinner and meeting are free. The featured speaker is Dr. Hammond, who is the field crop extension and research entomologist for the state of Ohio. His primary research interests are in the area of Integrated Pest Management, with emphasis on arthropods and other invertebrate pests in field crops. His presentation will help growers understand what protection is offered by corn hybrid traits, and how they fit Ohio production practices.  Contact John Yost at the Fayette Co. Extension Office (740-335-1150) for more details.
Upcoming Cattlemen Programs
The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association will hold their District Meeting on March 30 at Southern State Community College in Fincastle. The program will include a light meal prior to the 7 p.m. program.  Please call your local OSU Extension Office if you plan to attend.
