Smoke in the Hills cook-off Sept. 23

The Highland County Board of Commissioners, in cooperation with the Highland County Senior Citizens and the Highland County Visitors Bureau have renamed a sanctioned Kansas City Barbecue Society competition to be held at Rocky Fork Lake on Saturday, Sept. 23 it was announced at the Wednesday, May 17 meeting of the Highland County Board of Commissioners.
Due to a possible trademark infringement, “Smoke on the Water” has been renamed “Smoke in the Hills,” Commission President Shane Wilkin said this week.
“We’ve had great response (since the April announcement of the barbecue competition),” Wilkin said. “We’ve also got a major sponsor for the event.”
Wilkin said more information on the sponsorship will be forthcoming.
According to Highland County Visitors Bureau Director Destiny Bryson, applications for the competition are now available at http://www.kcbs.us/event/7365/smokin-in-the-hills or feel free to email dbryson@highlandcounty.com.
“I look forward to receiving your applications,” Bryson said.
Highland County Senior Center Food Service Manager Rhonda Purdin said last month that "We came up with a KCBS (Kansas City Barbeque Society) Pitmasters' sanctioned competition to be held Sept. 23 at the Rocky Fork Lake overlook (on the east shore off Lucas Lane) area. We've got a chance to have some major chefs who are on TV to be here.”
KCBS, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and enjoying barbecue, is the world's largest organization of barbecue and grilling enthusiasts with over 20,000 members worldwide. KCBS sanctions over 500 barbecue contests worldwide.
Bryson said the Smoke in the Hills event will be a state of Ohio championship cookoff, with chefs preparing four different meats: chicken, brisket, ribs and pulled pork. Visitors will be able to sample the chefs' barbecue through vending by the Senior Center staff.
The local winner will advance to compete in "The Jack," the annual Jack Daniel's World Championship Barbecue Invitational in Tennessee.
In addition to the cookoff, there will be a military and veteran-themed exhibit and tribute. Local U.S. Army recruiters, the Ohio National Guard and Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base have been contacted about having a number of military exhibits on display.
The day's events also will include a canoe/kayak race on Rocky Fork Lake in cooperation with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
