Austin Bohrer attended the “Ag is Everyone’s Business” event held at Southern State Community College in Hillsboro, where community members, students, and agricultural supporters gathered to learn more about important topics within the agriculture industry.

The featured speaker for the event was Temple Grandin, a well-known advocate for agricultural safety and individuals with special needs. During her presentation, Grandin spoke about the importance of safe livestock handling practices, particularly when working with cattle and other large animals. She emphasized how proper techniques and awareness can help prevent injuries for both animals and handlers.

Grandin also discussed the importance of effective livestock chute design, explaining how the layout and structure of equipment can significantly impact animal movement, stress levels, and overall safety. She shared insights from her own experiences, highlighting how thoughtful design can improve efficiency while ensuring humane treatment of animals.

In addition to her work in agriculture, Grandin spoke about the abilities of individuals with special needs, stressing that they are capable of achieving far more than many people may expect. She encouraged attendees to recognize the value of different ways of thinking, noting that creativity and unique problem-solving skills are often strengths in individuals with special needs. Her message was both educational and inspiring for those in attendance.

The event also included a breakfast that was prepared by All Seasons Catering in partnership with Shoelaces Catering. The meal was served by members of several local FFA chapters, including Fairfield, Great Oaks, Lynchburg, McClain, and Mowrystown. Their involvement provided students with an opportunity to contribute to the event while gaining experience in teamwork and service.

Overall, the “Ag is Everyone’s Business” event was informative and engaging, offering valuable lessons on agricultural safety, inclusion, and innovation. It also gave attendees the chance to come together as a community to support and learn more about the agricultural industry and the people who help it thrive.
