Popular HUBA BBQ Contest returns July 5

The HUBA BBQ Contest will be returning for the third annual event.
Hillsboro Uptown Business Association will be hosting the popular event in conjunction with the Festival of the Bells.
The contest will take place on Saturday, July 5 in the parking lot of Holtfield Station on South High Street.
Contestants will begin cooking that morning and continue throughout the day. At 6 p.m., the public is invited to sample each contestant’s BBQ and vote for their favorite. The contestant receiving the most votes will be awarded “The People’s Choice” trophy.
In addition to the “People’s Choice Award,” a team of judges will decide which BBQ is the best and that contestant will be awarded “Top Butt Cooker” at 7 p.m.
Larry Chapman, who has judged national and regional competitions, will once again head up the judging committee.
“Last year’s contest was the first for the “People’s Choice” award and it was a huge success. So we are hoping to get a large crowd to come out this year to sample the BBQ and vote. It’s a really fun event,” said John Hern, chairman of the event.
Ten teams have already signed up. There is room for more entrants. Interested teams may sign up by submitting an entry form by June 30. The entry fee is $50 which includes a pork butt to cook. Teams may display signs promoting their sponsor and are encouraged to do a theme.
“We are looking forward to another fun evening with much fraternizing and some great BBQ for the public to enjoy,” Hern said.
If you are interested in entering a team, please pick up an entry form at Cellular Solutions at 132 S. High St. in uptown Hillsboro.
