Our Daily Bread celebrates 6th anniversary of service

Mearle Griffith-
Our Daily Bread, a popular free meals program, recently celebrated its sixth anniversary of service to the Highland County area.

Organized by Dick and the late Anna Spilker in March of 2010, the program developed with the support and assistance of several local congregations. The program serves midday meals at First United Methodist Church each Tuesday and Thursday and now reports more than 1,200 meals prepared and served each month.

The purpose is to serve a quality meal and provide a place of welcome and hospitality for the community to gather. Any meal may find people from a dozen congregations working together to fulfill this mission and support those served. The public is welcome for the meals served from 11:30-12:30 each Tuesday and Thursday.

Judy Durbin, mission coordinator for First United Methodist Church, directs Our Daily Bread and coordinates the efforts of more than 40 volunteers, under the guidance of the program’s Board of Directors, chaired by Dick Spilker. Durbin says that 40 volunteers may sound like a lot, but she always needs additional people to carry out the program.

The program is funded by annual financial support from several Hillsboro area congregations as well as individual donations. Those who participate in the meals are also invited to contribute through a donation box at each meal. Additional funding has been provided through a grant from the Shawnee Valley District of the United Methodist Church.

Three local congregations and Samaritan Outreach also prepare a meal each month in support of the program. Local congregations preparing meals are Fall Creek Church of the Brethren, Touch Point Pentecostal and Common Ground.

Food is also received through the Cincinnati Food Bank, Samaritan Outreach and generous discounts from Community Market. First United Methodist Church provides space to accommodate the program as part of its outreach ministries.

Durbin says it would not be possible to serve the quality meals without the generous support from churches, volunteers, food and financial contributions.
