Ohio AG counsel present Historical Society workshop

The Highland County Historical Society Board of Trustees was the recipient at their January meeting of a workshop entitled Charitable Board Member Roles and Responsibilities sponsored by the Office of the Ohio Attorney General, Mike DeWine. 

Attorney Abby Kline led the PowerPoint presentation, accompanied by attorney Christie Limbert.

They emphasized that the Attorney General's role in oversight of charitable trusts, for the purpose of representing those who benefit from charities, dates to the Elizabethan period. 

The more than 67,000 tax-exempt entities in Ohio reported revenue of $64 billion and assets of $105 billion in 2010. The Ohio Charitable Trust Act is broadly defined as any organization or entity that holds money or property for a charitable, religious or educational purpose. 

Registration is required for charities that engage in charitable solicitation. The Highland County Historical Society Board of Trustees is seeking certification.
