A benefit auction to help cover medical expenses for a local student will be held Saturday, Aug. 13 at 6 p.m. at Buckskin Elementary in South Salem.

Makayla Bennett, 12, has been sick since April 2016. She was found to have kidney stones and has been into tremendous pain. She has had two surgeries for the kidney stones, and after the surgeries, she is still in constant pain. It is abnormal for a child her age to have any kidney stones, which were a symptom of her unidentified diagnosis.

After being treated at Columbus and Cincinnati Children’s Hospitals, Bennett was referred to the Cleveland Clinic, where she tested positive for lupus and is being tested for possible Crohn’s disease. Her immune system is being attacked, and doctors are trying to figure out the problem.

Bennett has trouble eating or drinking anything but water. Because of this, she has lost 16 pounds in the last three months.

Through all of this, Bennett has maintained a 4.0 GPA, even though she has continually missed school because of not being able to walk on her own and the many doctor appointments she has had to go to through the end of the school year. She has good days and bad but does her best to stay positive.

The benefit will raise money for Bennett’s family to help with the never-ending medical expenses.
