What started out as a dream for a young man in Greenfield finally came to fruition in the fall of 2012. Michael Richards and his wife, April, opened M & A Small Engine Repair with assistance from the Highland County Board of DD, Highco Inc. and the Rehabilitation Services Commission/Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation.
Although Richards walks with crutches due to cerebral palsy, he has not let this slow him down in reaching his goals.
"Being disabled makes it hard to be able to go out into the workforce and get a job," Richards said.
Richards began working on small engines in his backyard in a 16-foot by 10-foot shed. He said this hobby evolved, and with the assistance of the above agencies, he was able to grow his business.

The business held an open house on Thursday, March 28, as the nation celebrated Developmental Disabilities month.
Richards is able to work on anything from a chainsaw to a zero-turn mower. He is a Briggs and Stratton Master Service Technician and does warranty work on Honda, Home Lite and Poland weed eaters and AYP, to name a few. In the back of the shop is an overhead door that opens to a loading ramp, along with an electric winch to bring in disabled mowers. Richards also has a station for sharpening chainsaws and a place to make chains for saw blades.
Richards said all he ever wanted was to have a little money in his pocket and to be able to take his wife out once in a while.
"I am passionate about what I do," Richards said. "I love it."
M & A Small Engine Repair is located at 246 Jefferson St. in Greenfield. The shop is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon; and is closed on Sunday.
