Lynchburg Historical Society opening on Tuesdays; Dumenil family exhibit featured

Effective Tuesday, May 17, the Lynchburg Historical Society will be open on Tuesdays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
The Dumenil family exhibit will be in place. John Louis D’aumenil was born in France in 1831. At the age of 5, he came to the United States. The family traveled to Iowa. John learned to be a cooper and came to Lynchburg in 1857 to the brand-new distillery. He served in several public offices, including as mayor twice.
The exhibit was donated by great-grandson Charles III and great-granddaughter Ann.
Although local residents may not recall the family, many are related. Stockwells, Hendersons, Winkles, and Sharps are part of the same family. Charles Dumenil II resided in Peebles for many years as he was the pharmacist there.
The Society’s archives include local papers from 1953 to 1996. Visitors can peruse these books to see Lynchburg activities from their school days.
Children might enjoy seeing the old typewriter, adding machine or telephones from the past.
Just come to reminisce about “the good old days in Lynchburg” with folks who grew up here. The Society is located at 151 S. Main Street near the police office.
