Local coon hunters organize 2nd world championship at Highland County Fairgrounds

The CHKC Little World Coonhound Championship was held at the Highland County Fairgrounds, beginning Tuesday, June 2.

Coonhunters from as far as Texas, Connecticut and Florida traveled to the fairgrounds to participate in the competition, which drew 377 hounds.

John Parsley of Grove City and his dog Jake won the competition Sunday night and took home the grand prize of $20,000.

The Highland County Rabbit Council provided great meals every day for the hunters. They were also able to raise $3,700 from the event that will go toward buying new cages for the 4-H rabbit barn.

A cake auction was also held Friday night, with proceeds going toward 4-H.

“This was our second time hosting the event, and we feel this event has the potential to make a huge impact for our community,” local coordinator Scott Lewis said. “We filled every hotel, motel, cabin and cottage in the area.

“We would like to thank all the support from local club members that made this event possible. We look forward to hosting a bigger and better event next year.”
