Landscaping awards for Hillsboro

McDonald's is the 2014 recipient of the summer Commercial Landscaping Award from the Hillsboro Garden Club.
General Manager Ellie Shoemaker accepted the certificate honoring the restaurant for outstanding design and maintenance of commercial property and for their contribution to community beautification.
According to Ms. Shoemaker, the franchise owner Ed Wernatt chooses which plants will be featured each year and has them in the ground for Mother's Day.

This year, the selection of deep pink and purple petunias, blue salvia and purple veronica, all planted in multiple islands surrounding the restaurant, was considered especially noteworthy by garden club members.
The residential award was presented to Ruth Pickering of 113 N. West Street in recognition of her irrepressible enthusiasm for gardening and longstanding commitment to making her limited space as full of blooms and beauty as possible.
The Pickerings have resided at their home for 30 years and Mrs. Pickering continues to plant, transplant and add to her garden every year, including pots of annuals like geraniums and Wandering Jew and a variety of other shade-loving succulents.
The Hillsboro Garden Club meets monthly from March through November, on the fourth Tuesday of each month, in the Katherine Granger Floral Hall on the Fair Grounds.
