Widespread hope, love and prayers culminated in a benefit for the Kiesling family May 6 at Fairfield and raised $40,000.
Just after Christmas, news that Lynnette (Kiesling) Shanton, 32, had a cancerous tumor circulated in Leesburg, and two months later, one was also found in her mother, Dawna Jo Kiesling.
Following chemotherapy setbacks for both women, friends gathered to plan a benefit. Area caterer Mike Allering offered to cook, and classmates of the Kiesling children stepped up to print flyers, set up a Facebook page, order and sell T-shirts, solicit items for a live and a silent auction and even organize a basketball tournament.

There were 574 meals served, and 212 silent auction donations and 26 live auction items were sold. T-shirt sales topped 225, and 43 Fairfield grads competed in a four-team basketball tournament. Benefit coordinators can account for 1,000 participants.
Dean and Dawna Jo Kiesling, along with the rest of their adult children, are overwhelmed and truly thankful. A note from Dean appears at facebook.com/2motherskiesling.
