James McLaughlin organ recital leads off 'Music At St. Mary's' Series

St. Mary’s Episcopal Church announces their 2014-15 Concert Series, “Music at St. Mary’s,” will begin with former Hillsboro resident, James McLaughlin, presenting an organ recital on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 3 p.m.

Jim was born and raised in Hillsboro, the younger son of Bob and Virgie Lee McLaughlin. He graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1964 and had served as organist at Hillsboro Church of Christ during his high school years.

After receiving his bachelor's of fine arts degree from Ohio University majoring in voice and organ, he taught vocal music and choir in the Zanesville City Schools for 31 years. Jim has served churches as music director or organist in Athens and Zanesville.

 

 

Jim is an adjudicator for voice, piano and choir events for the Ohio Music Education Association. He owns a music conservatory in Zanesville offering lessons in piano, organ and voice. Jim recently stepped down as Director of Music at Central Trinity United Methodist Church in Zanesville and is now serving as artist in residence.

He continues to direct the Zanesville Civic Chorus which will be presenting their 85th annual performance of the oratorio, “Messiah.”

In addition, he serves as the booking agent for the Zanesville Concert Association and as assistant director to the Y-City Barbershop Chorus.

This recital, as every concert in the series, is free and open to the public. Attendees are invited to a reception following the recital, to visit with Jim. The next performance will be on Nov. 23 when Wilmington College Early Music groups, Collegium Musicum and My Musical Friends will perform.
