Human Rights Celebration honors Rev. Janie Shoemaker

Retired pastor Janie Shoemaker was honored at the annual Human Rights Celebration held by the Highland County Church Women United group.

The celebration was held Dec. 10, 2014, with 20 people in attendance.

Rev. Janie Shoemaker was born in the Marshall area of Highland County.

She grew up in the Marshall Methodist Church. A life-long Methodist, she received her call to the ministry while working at Landmark in Hillsboro.

She attended classes at Asbury College in Wilmore, Ky. After graduating from the United Theological Seminary in Dayton with a master of divinity degree, she was ordained in the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church in 1999.

Rev. Shoemaker took on the Rainsboro Charge which contained the Methodist churches in Rainsboro, Boston, New Petersburg and Marshall.

The churches grew under Janie's leadership, reaching out to the surrounding communities through an active food pantry, Vacation Bible School, weekly Bible studies and a youth ministry.

After 16 years, Rev. Shoemaker retired and she and her husband, Floyd, enjoy traveling and spending time with their family. She performs weddings and funerals, but no longer preaches.
