Holtfield baristas honoring area moms with Mother's Day art project

A Hillsboro coffee shop hopes to bring a smile to area mothers’ faces Sunday, May 9, as staff members and their families have worked to create homemade Mother’s Day gifts for their customers.
Holtfield Coffee Station manager Lacey Ballein said that 180 hand-painted flower pots will be presented on a first-come, first-serve basis on Mother’s Day for moms who visit the coffee shop. Each pot is unique, with designs in a wide variety of colors and patterns.
This is an expansion of a similar project they started last year, where Ballein said they painted around 70 larger pots.
“Our customers doubled, so we tried to get enough to cover everyone,” she said.
Last year on Mother’s Day, the station was closed to walk-in customers due to the pandemic, so she said she was outside with a cart passing out flowers to people in the drive-thru line.
“We started it last year as kind of like a team-building thing I did,” Ballein said. “We were closed down, so we all came in here since there were no customers. Everyone donated their time to do that.
“We thought this year, we’d keep it going.”
Ballein said that Holtfield staff — including baristas, gas station employees and some members of their families, including children — have been working on painting the pots since Monday, April 26, where they started the project at Ballein’s house. They also have a table set up near the coffee station, where staff can continue working on the pots during the rare downtimes at the shop.
“I was blown away,” Ballein said. “I had no idea we had so many talented artists. They’re all so cute, and all are hand-painted.”
Later this week, once all the pots are painted, Ballein said they will plant flowers in each pot.
In addition to the first 180 mothers visiting the shop on May 9 receiving this gift from Holtfield staff, one person will be the lucky recipient of a special prize. Ballein said that one pot will be marked for a giveaway — a Mother’s Day cookie bouquet from the Little Green Apron bakery.
Holtfield is no stranger to promoting art through their coffee shop. As previously reported, students from Buckskin and Rainsboro Elementary Schools provided hand-painted sleeves for the shop’s coffee cups in March. They’ve also used sleeves painted by artists at Highco and by their own artistic baristas.
Ballein said the shop is working on a similar project this month, in conjunction with the Lions Club and with The Laurels of Hillsboro.
“They’re going to be planting flowers in our cups, and then one of our girls, Izzy, hand-decorated sleeves with inspirational quotes and different flower, spring-type designs,” Ballein said. “The Lions Club is going to plant those flowers, and they’re going to put the windowsills at The Laurels.
“All summer long, we’re just trying to find some fun, artistic ways to try to put back out in the community.”
