Historical Society hosting annual Log Cabin Cookout Sept. 16

Lead Summary
By
Dr. Lawrence Dukes-
The Highland County Historical Society’s Log Cabin Cookout, a traditional fall event for more than 20 years, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 5 p.m. on the back lawn surrounding the historical log cabin.

This popular event will again feature the usual fare of ham and beans, cornbread, salad, dessert and drinks. A new addition to the event will be the musical duo of Dave and Brenda Hardin performing during the dinner.

The cabin, originally built in 1830, will be open for viewing during the evening. With the current interest and popularity of the “small house” movement, it is worth seeing how the original small frontier houses were constructed and functioned. The similarities might just surprise you. Recent additions to the site include a stone walkway leading to the cabin, a hitching post and repair of the chinking between the logs by Boy Scout William Albert.

Following the dinner, at 6:30 p.m., an auction of various antiques and other collectibles will take place. Auctioneer Tim Koehl will preside with the able assistance of Bob Brown, as both are trustees of the Society. As always, the proceeds of the auction will go toward the ongoing support of the Highland House Museum.

Reservations for the dinner event can be made by calling the museum office at (937) 393-3392 by Monday, Sept. 11, leaving your name, phone number and number of reservations. Donations will be accepted with proceeds to pay for utility costs and maintenance of the Highland House and Scott House.
