H. Lawson Walker was “Mr. Scouter” in Highland County for nearly 70 years. His legacy in scouting resounds to this day.

Walker was born in Winkle, Ohio in 1904.

On his 12th birthday, he joined the Boy Scout Troop of Carey Roush. He was active in scouting continually after that, becoming patrol leader and assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 1 under Scoutmaster Frank Leslie. From 1931, he was Scoutmaster of that same troop, now known as Troop 171.

He was awarded the Scoutmaster’s Key, Scoutmaster’s Award and the Silver Beaver Award.

A vigil member of the Order of the Arrow, he was a leader at seven National Scout Jamborees.

Walker retired as manager of the Hillsboro office of the Lebanon Production Credit Association. He was a member of the Hillsboro Church of Christ, where he taught a boys’ Sunday School class for 30 years.

He served in the United States Army during World War II and was commander of the Raymond R. Stout American Legion Post 129. Walker also served as a member of the Hillsboro City Council from 1945-48.

He married Lucille Kerr, and they became the parents of one son, Lawson Walker II.
