Allen Trimble
(1783-1870)
Allen Trimble was Ohio’s eighth and tenth governor and a member of the Ohio House of Representatives and the Ohio Senate for Highland County.
Born in Augusta County, Va., Trimble’s father freed his slaves in 1801.
In 1805, they settled in Highland County where, in 1808, Allen secured the position of Highland County clerk of courts and recorder of deeds. During the War of 1812, he served as a colonel.
Trimble was elected to the House of Representatives for the 15th General Assembly in 1816.
Later, elected to the Ohio Senate. He served as speaker of the Senate for seven assemblies.
Trimble served as governor in 1822, filling the unexpired term of Ethan A. Brown.
He was elected governor of Ohio in 1826 and 1828.
He supported progressive measures for education and was instrumental in the forming of Ohio’s common school system and State canal system.
He was later instrumental in establishing the Ohio State Board of Agriculture.
In 1855, he ran unsuccessfully for governor on the American Party ticket, trying to stem the tide of the coming Civil War.
