Historical Society celebrates 50th year of Highland House Museum

Joe Rockhold was an entertainer renowned for his “Uncle Orrie” character and also was instrumental in the leadership of the Highland County Historical Society.??

Joseph Glenn Rockhold was born in Hillsboro and educated in Hillsboro schools. ??

He attended the John B. Rogers School of Stage Arts and Dramatics in Fostoria, Ohio and became a director, staging shows in 37 states. Mr. Rockhold took a job at WHBD radio in Mt. Orab and from there moved to WLW in Cincinnati. ??

Later, at WXYZ in Detroit, he acted in the radio version of “The Lone Ranger” and other network shows because of his talent for many different voices.??

At the advent of television, Mr. Rockhold became an announcer and entertainer for WHIO in Dayton, where his Uncle Orrie character was popular with children for 18 years. He also recruited and led promotions for thousands of area Boy Scouts.??

Mr. Rockhold retired in 1968 and from 1970 for many years served as president of the Highland County Historical Society.
