Hillsboro Lions Club recycles for sight and hearing

The Hillsboro Lions Club would like to thank the community for supporting our "Lions Recycle for Sight" program. Lions Clubs worldwide collect used prescription eyeglasses, and prescription and non-prescription sunglasses as part of a unique recycling program. Millions of people in developing nations lack access to basic eye care services. Eye care is either unaffordable or inaccessible. Donated eyeglasses can help millions to experience corrected vision for the first time, enabling them to read, attend school, gain employment and take care of their families.
It is estimated that Lions clubs collect more than 20 million pairs of glasses each year. Thanks to community support of this project, the Hillsboro Lions Club collected 2,390 pairs of glasses in 2007; 3,046 pairs in 2008; 2,400 pairs in 2009; and 2,300 pairs so far in 2010. The donated glasses are delivered to the Ohio State University College of Optometry where they are cleaned, sorted by prescription, and prepared for distribution by Lions and other groups to the poor in developing countries.
Convenient drop-off boxes are at the following locations in Hillsboro: Kmart, Kroger, Great Scot, Wal-Mart, Hillsboro High School, Hillsboro Elementary School, and the Highland County Senior Citizens Center. In addition, collection boxes are at the following offices: Dr. Ralph Williams, Dr. Leah McConnaughey, Dr. Tausha Barton, Dr. Jeffrey Ropar, Dr. Dean Kiesling and Dr. William King.
Thank you for your continued support of this program.
