Hillsboro Garden Club winners at Holiday Flower Show
The Hillsboro Garden Club came home winners Saturday, Nov. 8 at the Holiday Flower Show presented by the Greene County Association of Garden Clubs.
Many beautiful floral designs were on display at Knollwood Garden Center, all with a holiday theme, "'Tis the Season."
The "Christmas Morning" class was won by Carol Gorby, who presented a modern religious depiction of Madonna and Child beneath a stylized Star of Bethlehem. Eye-catching orange bromeliad blooms accented the star and hand-sculpted Madonna.
The "Black Friday" class introduced a new type of design showing the influence of steampunk, a sub-genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery, especially in a setting inspired by Western civilization during the 19th century. Larry Moore of Hillsboro claimed a blue ribbon and the Judge's Award of Distinction for his outstanding design "Gears of Time." Moore's design featured an assembly of various bicycle gears meshing together, highlighted by three white dried alliums and fresh greenery.

Gorby also placed in the "Black Friday" class with a design featuring a large gear highlighted by dried hydrangea blooms with copper and tulle accents.
Judy Moore came home a first-place winner with her entry in the "Wrap It" class, featuring a beautiful wrapped gift package. Her entry, entitled "A Country Christmas," was wrapped in burlap with a sheer red ribbon and bow, festooned with holly, sprigs of bittersweet and white mums.
The Knollwood Christmas Flower Show and Open House is a yearly event and kicks off the Christmas season at the Beavercreek nursery. It is a wonderful place to visit this time of year.
