The Hillsboro Garden Club traveled to Grace Community Church in Washington Court House for the Fall Region 16 Meeting on October 8, 2009 where the theme "Colonial Harvest" was hosted by Fayette County floral clubs.  The welcome was delivered by Linda Morgan, who gave some history on the church's structure and programs.  "Colonial Arrangements" was the morning program featuring Nathan Zurkowwitz & Julia Hidy. Some of their creations were Williamsburg fruit cones with lemons, apples, and pineapples; opened pumpkins as plant containers or floral arrangement bases; tiered pedestal dish featuring gourd and fall wreaths for thanksgiving/fall celebrations; and an urn with wet floral foam and fresh fall colored flowers arranged.  Janet Walker passing the gavel to new regional director Sue Hess was installed by Sharon Ware, 1st Vice President of Ohio Association of Garden Clubs.
Six-county region 16 had officer and county contact reports from representatives.  Dena Benner, Highland County Contact Chairman, reported on the Highland District Library floral plot project, Holiday parade entry, and the availability of entries in Highland County Fair Floral Show to competitors in surrounding counties on Open Day.  Changes in the format of OAGC contests will take place in 2011: no more media/photo contests, new department to take charge of program & publicity entries.  Deadline of December 15 for 2008-2009 materials was stressed...get energized, enter your clubs action.  Following lunch, there was a drama presentation by Julia Hidy, who represented a lady of the 1800 and told of her day and how herbs were important.  The fact that ladies could inherit 1/3 of the departed husband's wealth but was expected to marry soon and lost control of her wealth to her new husband was a reminder of the liberation path that women have gained in the USA.  OSU Extension Fact Sheets were present for information on selecting, storing, and using fresh herbs.  Flowery recipes as flower syrup, flower butter, flower sugar, flower honey as well as listing of edible flowers were provided from Master Gardener Conference Speaker Cindy Burskey from Warren County. Linda Morgan had a display of fresh herbs from her garden to ponder and examine.
Some of the awards presented from the OAGC year were received by Hillsboro Garden Club:  Outstanding Garden Club Member Region 16--Beryl Gruelle, Superior in Program and Publicity Entries, Excellent in Fair Flower Shows.  Attending from Hillsboro Garden Club were:  County Contact Chr. Dena Benner, President Nancy Baldwin, Vice Pres. Larry Moore, Sec. Carol Gorby, Treas. Ruth Anna Duff, Phone Comm. Juanita Carson.  Past County Contact Chairmen, as Nancy Baldwin from Highland County, received a flower pot greeting doll from Janet Walker, retiring Region 16 Director.
The Fayette Clubs had made dried basket arrangments that they shared as door prizes to the many attending.  Silk flower corsages served as name tags for the event.  OAGC and Floral Club booths were present for shopping convenience where items as plant labeling metal spikes; books on subjects as butterflies, roses, arranging; produce/floral as butternut squash, large celosia/cockscomb, giant allium spheres, sweet annie wreaths. painted gourd creatures, were a few of items available for sale.  Sue Hackney, Madison County, invited the gathering to the Spring May 13, 2010 Regional.
