Highland House Museum showcases 2 new exhibits
The Highland County Historical Society has announced that a collection of antique shaving mugs is on display through April 26 at the Highland House Museum.
Longtime Highland County Historical Society member and volunteer John Glaze has loaned about 90 percent of his collection, which is currently on display at the museum. The mugs range from “flowery” to functional, along with a selection of fraternal mugs from Masons and Knights of Columbus.
The exhibit can be viewed on weekends through April 26 with the exception of April 5, April 11 and April 19.
Glaze said he has worked on his collection for over 40 years, purchasing most from auctions and antique shops and receiving some as gifts. He first became interested in collecting shaving mugs after his family received shaving mugs owned by his grandfather and his great-uncle.
Among the oldest mugs in the display is a metal shaving mug from the Civil War era.
Glaze said that there is also a variety of shapes to the mugs, including soap cups, shaving scuttles and mugs with interesting carvings.
Also on display are vintage toiletries, such as Williams Shaving Powder, and a selection of portraits from Highland County Historical Society trustee Avery Applegate’s collection.
Highland House is also presenting a Girl Scout Memorabilia Display through April 30.
The special exhibit of Girl Scout memorabilia, on loan from Troop 321, covers many different historical time periods and includes handbooks, badges, uniforms, toys and a variety of other items.
Items on loan come from individuals throughout Highland County, according to museum director Vicki Knauff.

• Speaker Series, Music Series, special exhibits and more to be announced.
