Highland County Recycling Program updates

Highland County Community Action Organization (HCCAO), along with the Highland County Commissioners and the RPHF Solid Waste District, manage, operate and monitor the counties recycling and litter control program. HCCAO is in its fourth year in managing the program, and wants to share some exciting updates with the community.
Whitney Bradley joined the Recycling Team at HCCAO in 2021. She is currently overseeing the education and community outreach of the program.
There are currently eight bin sites throughout the county for the public to drop off their recyclables. The most recent addition was to the Rocky Fork area where two bins were added at the entrance of the Rocky Fork Lake State Park campgrounds.
The bins can be found at the exit of the campground area, 9800 North Shore Drive. As with all the bins throughout the county, they are free to the residents and visitors of the area. As a reminder, items that can be recycled are Glass bottles and jars, Plastic Bottles and Jugs, Paper and cardboard. Please make sure you break down boxes so as to save bin space.
Also, items that SHOULD NOT be put in the bins: Furniture, ceramics, garden hoses, Construction debris, paint, plastic bags, food waste, or electronics. In the past bin sites have had to be closed due to misuse, and illegal dumping, so it is asked that all residents use the bins responsibly, and if you see illegal dumping or materials on the ground you report it to HCCAO as soon as possible.
The RPHF Solid Waste District and Highland County Community Action continue to partner in holding a billboard contest that is open to all the 5th grade students within Highland County. This was a difficult year to get into the schools, but Bradley was able to visit the majority. The wonderful area teachers and amazing students are all too eager to learn about the different ways they can help their community become more clean and safe for everyone. Deadline for the entries is Jan. 29, 2022.
One winner will be picked during a RPHF Solid Waste District meeting, and the winner’s drawing will be put on a billboard, along with their picture being featured in the newspaper. The winner will also receive a trophy, a $25 gift card and a $25 gift card for the winner’s teacher to be used in the classroom.
Highland County residents have at their disposal the “Highland County Litter Library”. What is that, you ask? The Litter Library is a resource for groups, organizations, companies, schools, etc, that can be checked out and used to clean up public areas of Highland County.
If your group is interested in public clean up contact Bradley at HCCAO and request a tote, which is filled with all the proper materials needed for roadside and public area clean-up. It comes with gloves, trash bags, sharps containers, vests, and trash grabbers that can be used for retrieving loose litter. The benefit of taking advantage of such a wondrous resource is that it helps keep Highland County safe and clean for its residents, visitors, as well as its wildlife! The litter library is free to use for cleaning road ways, water ways, parks and more and can be checked out from HCCAO.
Looking into the future, HCCAO is eagerly planning future projects and events. Earth Day is coming up April 22. The community groups and organizations are encouraged to come check out a Litter Clean-Up tote and select an area of the county to pick up litter.
