Highland County Democrats enjoy ‘Run for the Roses’ event on Derby Day

It was a photo finish all around at Highland County Democrats’ headquarters Saturday evening, as the group welcomed Congressional candidate Samantha Meadows at their Kentucky Derby Run for the Roses event.
Carol Gratsch won the grand prize drawing of a Dixieland Riverboat cruise and brunch for two. Janis and Thom Snyder won the blue and gold ribbons for best dressed couple. Jennifer Jones, escorted by her fiancee, Matt Shonkwiler, received the winning blue sash for most elegant hat.
Meadows was presented with a dozen red roses and over $2,500 in individual campaign contributions.
The Derby committee served the celebratory group with faux mint juleps garnished with fresh mint and ice roses; hot pulled-pork sliders; ham salad sandwiches; specialty chips; a three-tiered presentation of cheeses and strawberries; iced cookies with a horseshoe design; mini cupcakes; sweet cream cheese and chocolate chip dip; southern pralines; and candy chocolate-caramel turtles.
Meadows took the theme to heart, arriving in a dress covered in roses and wearing a rose-red hat. She said, “What a great turnout for this region. And, oh, all the banners, the floral arrangements, the lovely table décor, that amazing doorway rose horseshoe — and, of course, the hats. Everything was just beautiful. It was a wonderful night.”
