Highland County commissioners proclaim May as Buddy Poppy Month

Highland County commissioners Jeff Duncan, Terry Britton and David Daniels declared the month of May as Buddy Poppy Month in Highland County during their Wednesday, May 4 meeting.
Accepting the proclamation were VFW Post 9094 Senior Vice Commander Dwight Reynolds and Buddy Poppy chairman Roy Geiger.
Reynolds distributed poppies for not only the three commissioners, but everyone present at the weekly meeting.
All donations from the sale of Buddy Poppies stay in the county and are put into the VFW’s relief fund, which is used to help local veterans. The poppies are also assembled by disabled veterans.
As noted by both Reynolds and the proclamation, Buddy Poppies have been sold by VFW organizations since 1922.
“It's been two years because of COVID we've been unable to do this, so the funds are greatly needed,” Reynolds told the commissioners. “Highland County is superb about supporting veterans. I want them to know that the funds that we collect stay local. We don't send it to DC or anywhere else. It goes to needy veterans and disabled veterans, because not all of them qualify out at the Veterans Service Office for help.”
Reynolds also thanked the commissioners for supporting the fundraiser, which he said is a “great cause.”
“Thank you, gentlemen, for coming, and for your service,” Duncan said.
Duncan read the proclamation, which “declares the month of May as Poppy Month.”
“Throughout Highland County, we urge all citizens to acknowledge the significance, goodwill and importance the VFW holds in our fair city and encourages all citizens to wear a Buddy Poppy as mute evidence of our gratitude to the men and women of this country who have risked their lives in defense of freedoms which we continue to enjoy as American citizens,” the proclamation said.
A canister of Buddy Poppies available for purchase was left at the commissioners’ office, while VFW representatives will be visiting area businesses throughout the month of May to sell poppies for this annual fundraiser.
