Greenfield Historical Society hosts Cemetery Stroll Aug. 10

The Greenfield Historical Society announces it second annual Cemetery Stroll will be 3-7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10 in the Greenfield Cemetery on North Washington Street.

Highlighted on this year's stroll will be Greenfield authors and poets, Greenfield business people and abolitionists.

The interesting artwork and poetry found on various tombstones will also be pointed out.

Included in the stroll will be: M.I. Dunlap, Alexander Beatty, Harriet West, W.F. Woodmansee, Albert Mackerley and Louis Ashling, among others.

The stroll is different from the society's annual Ghost Walk held in October. When visitors arrive any time between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. for the stroll, they will register at the Chapel near the main gate and receive an informational booklet.

The booklet will allow them to take the self-guided tour at their own pace. The highlighted graves will be marked for easy identification and society hosts will be on hand to answer questions that the walkers might have.

The booklet also includes photographs of some present day sites that are connected to the people discussed.

The committee of John King, Wendy Royse and Susan Thompson were in charge of preparing for the stroll this year and putting together the guide booklet.

Jon Brewer, cemetery superintendent, and his staff have done a great job of preparing the cemetery for visitors.

Also, on display will be the artwork of Shirley King. Mrs. King is an artist that specializes in painting with colored pencils. She demonstrated her art technique during the society's History Day activities last October. Her beautiful painting of the Cemetery Chapel will be on display.

She is donating the picture to the Greenfield Historical Society

No admission to the event is being charged and the guide booklet is free. The society will also provide chairs for resting in the shade and water to quench the thirst after strolling.

Come on out to the cemetery on Aug. 10 for a healthy walk and a learning experience while enjoying a visit with friends.
