Greenfield Historical Society to hold 10th annual History Day Oct. 1

The Greenfield Historical Society will hold its 10th annual History Day on Saturday, Oct. 1 at its buildings at the east end of Jefferson Street in Greenfield.
Activities will begin with a History 5K at 9 a.m., with the rest of the activities beginning at 10 a.m. and ending at 4 p.m.
New this year will be a 5K run/walk beginning at Travellers Rest. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., with the race kicking off at 9 a.m. Walkers as well as runners are encouraged to participate. Prizes will be awarded by age groups. All of the society’s buildings will open and activities will begin at 10 a.m. Special displays will be available in each building, along with a flea market and farmer’s market. Food for the day will include pork loin smoked on site by Chris Dodds, along with bean soup, hot dogs and other items.
The Depot will have a whole new look. The railroad and military displays have been totally revamped to make room for Tom Adams’s train display. Adams has spent considerable time this summer rearranging the Depot. This will be the first time that his whole model of Greenfield’s trains will be on public display. The Depot will be its new permanent home, as Adams is donating it to the society. The Society is very appreciative of the donation and the work Adams has put into improving the Depot.
The Smith Tannery will have a display of gowns from the Mains family that were recently donated to the society by David King. In the Tannery kitchen, Teena Thornton will be demonstrating the craft of knitting and explaining a knitting machine that was recently donated to the society. Along with Thornton, Susan Forman will be on hand to demonstrate the skill of spinning. Guests will be able to try their hands at spinning with a drop spindle.
Jim Gorman, a farmer and an award-winning toy builder of southern Highland County, will be in Travellers Rest, where he will have a display of handmade farm machinery toys. Gorman builds 1/16 scale models of farm equipment and has also done a scale model of his century farm's barn, which will be on display. Several antique tractors will be on display on the lawn of Travellers Rest, thanks to several members of the Greenfield Antique Tractor Club.
Crafters in the Grain & Hay building will be Jayne Honnold and Shirley King. Honnold will be sharing her quilting craft and some of the items she has made. King will be demonstrating her skill of painting with colored pencils. She will have samples of her work to show to guests.
Tentatively, a demonstration of pressing apples for cider will be on hand, and of course the Red Barn will be open. There, visitors will be able to see the Ahrens Fox fire truck, Browder lifesaving net, Conestoga wagon, buggies and various farm items.
