Garden Club finalizes plans for flower show

The Hillsboro Garden Club held its monthly meeting on Aug. 24 at Floral Hall. The meeting was called to order by President Nancy Baldwin, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and singing of God Bless America.
All preparations were finalized for the Highland County Fair Flower Show. Rose Marie Cowdrey gave assignments to volunteers and reviewed the set-up and tear-down dates and times. Hopes were high that the hot, dry weather wouldn't affect participation at the shows. Gloria Wright reported three shrubs were replaced and Town & Country Greenhouse donated chrysanthemums for the Floral Hall flower beds. Jennifer West reported that the OAGC representatives would be visiting during the fair to observe both the library bed and Floral Hall beds for the Civic Beautification Contest.
The next meeting will be the traditional Fall Plant Auction. Members will be donating divisions and starts of their homegrown plants as well as all things garden-related for sale to the highest bidder. Members and public alike are urged to attend and bid.
Following the meeting, Wright presented an interactive program on Tea Cup Floral Arrangements. After demonstrating the technique, each member selected a prepared cup and a selection of flowers and greenery for their design. After much snipping, trading of blooms, and design decisions, each person went home with a lovely tea cup arrangement.
Delicious refreshments of fresh fruit salad and pineapple upside down cake were served by Mary Jane Espelage and Teresa Cudkowicz and enjoyed by all.
