The Highland County Dog Pound has the following dogs available for adoption or rescue pulls as of April 29, listed courtesy of the Friends of the Highland County Dog Pound.
(1) Casper: Casper is a suspected shepherd mix who came in as a stray. Casper had been staying in the same spot on the side of a busy roadway for two days due to not wanting to leave his friend who didn’t make it. Casper was so happy to see us. He is pretty skinny for his size, weighing only 43 lbs. He is very young, between 1-2.
(2) Athena: Athena was found sitting in the middle of a roundabout. She is a Rottweiler mix. She looks to be around a year old and around 55 lbs. She seems to be fine with other dogs.
(3) Indigo: Indigo is a bully breed mix who weighs around 40 lbs and is around 1 year old. She is a very sweet girl and seems to be good with other dogs.

(4) Shadow: Meet Shadow: Shadow is a mix who weighs around 60 lbs. She came to us as a stray. He loves people and seems good with other dogs.
(5) Bonnie: Bonnie is a pit mix around 2 years old and weighs around 40 lbs. We got her as a stray who had six puppies. She is a pretty sweet girl who loves outside time. She has been fine with other dogs.
(6) Wednesday: She is a pit mix around 3 years old who weighs around 55 lbs. She was found as a stray. While waiting for a kennel to open up with us, she was at a home that had cats and chickens, and she did great with them. She has been good with other dogs as well.
(7) Bones: Bones came to us after his owner passed away. A woman who cared for the owner said that Bones was a stray that had showed up. He got his name because he was exactly that, skin and BONES. Bones is a young, loving pit mix.

(8) Clifford: Clifford, as in the big red dog, because that's exactly him. This big guy is possibly around 4 years old and weighs 75 lbs. Clifford is so friendly and loving. Not sure on the breed but possibly lab mix. All the black pups you will see also were brought in with him. This big guy seemed to do just fine when around another dog. Intake date: 5/17/24. Donations received for him will go along with him to the rescue that helps him. Choose Clifford!
(9) Diesel: Diesel is a pit mix who came to us as a stray. He is very friendly and loves to play and get loved on. He has done well with other dogs here at the pound and he came in with a female. He is short and stocky, weighing around 45 lbs. Intake date: 4/29/24.

(10) Happy Feet: If you ever wanted to pull a pit bull, he is the one. Happy Feet got his name because when you go to his kennel door, he's so happy to see you and his front feet dance. He is around 2-3 years old and weighs a whopping 70 lbs. Happy Feet has been around other dogs here at the pound and seems to be fine with them. He doesn't really pay any attention to them. Intake date: 5/13/24.
(11) Willow: Willow was picked up as a stray from a campground. She's a shepherd mix and is estimated at 1-2 years of age and around 45-50 lbs. She isn't as friendly with other dogs as when she first came to the pound, but perhaps she will go back to who she was when she gets a life on the outside. She is a sweet girl, though.

(12) Scrappy: Scrappy came to us as a stray who was very, very thin. Since this picture, he has gained weight and looks much better, weighing around 38 lbs. and estimated at 1-2 years old. Scrappy is a very good boy who will sit right with you when you kneel down. He must have had some previous training that he remembers. He has been good with other dogs.
(13) Cider: Cider seems to be a boxer mix and is estimated to be 1-2 years old and 50 pounds. She is a very loving girl. She is dog selective, and older children would be recommended.

(14) Wren: Wren is a shepherd mix who is around 8-10 years old and weighs around 60-70 lbs. Wren needs a home to just lay around and live out the rest of his days at. Wren has arthritis in his back hips that is starting, cataracts in his eyes and some lumps on his legs which may or may not be cancerous. Please consider pulling Wren so he doesn't have to keep sitting in a kennel.
(15) Simba: Simba is a mix who came to us as a stray. He is around 3 years old and weighs 40 lbs. He is very friendly and seems to do well with dogs.
(16) Teddy: Teddy came to us as a stray. He is around 3 years old and weighs around 30 lbs. He is very friendly and does well with other dogs.
(17) Bella: Bella came to us as an owner surrender after her owner had to start traveling for work (truck driver). She is 3 years old. He said she was a Bernese Mountain Dog, but I am going to say a mix. She has been around cats and children. She actually came in with a male dog and has been fine with other dogs here. She weighs 85 lbs.
(18) Rosie: Rosie was found in an abandoned house with her eight newborn puppies in mid-January 2025. By the time she was reported, she had already had the pups and only six had made it. She had to be live trapped and ended up losing two more with the cold. She was not being a good mom here at the shelter, so her pups went to a local rescue. She is very shy and is still unsure of humans, but we are working on that every day. She has progressed a little bit. She seems to be friendly with other dogs. Rosie desperately needs be pulled or find a long-term foster who could work with her. She is not aggressive at all.
(19) Mrs. Piggy: Mrs. Piggy is around 2 years old and weighs around 40 lbs. She has the biggest smile and is friendly with all people. She would do better in an only dog home.
(20) Millie: Millie is a husky who also weighs 50 lbs. and is estimated at 1-2 years old. Millie and Mocha are very similar in everything except for the darker and lighter colors. She is very friendly and does fine with other dogs.

(21) Mocha: Mocha is a husky weighing 50 lbs. She is 1-2 years old. She is very friendly but also very dramatic (normal husky) and loves to talk to you. She was brought in as a stray with Millie, who you'll also see. Mocha doesn’t exactly like being on a leash. She instead chooses to lie down and wants you to carry her.
(22) Sam: Meet Sam. Sam was brought to us as a stray. After a little help from the finder, we found out he belongs to a family who had recently gotten him but has decided they no longer want him. Sam weighs a whopping 8 lbs. but is around 8-10 years old. Our vet thinks he has a heart murmur. Sam is all around a great dog and may even be potty trained. He rides well in a car and seems OK with other dogs.
(23) Queso: Queso is a German Shepherd who currently weighs about 85 lbs. He is about 3 years old. Queso is a very gentle boy who is very smart. He already knows some commands. He rides in a vehicle well. He has done well with other dogs here.
(24) Lucky: Lucky is a 2-3 year old mixed breed who weighs around 40 lbs. He is very friendly and seems to be good with other dogs. Very nice happy boy.
(25) Blade: Blade is a pit mix weighing around 50 lbs. He was found as a stray dumped at a local state park. He was very scared and would not let anyone get within five feet of him, although you could tell he wanted to be helped. We set a live trap and walked away enough to where we could see him and he went right in. Blade has started to shine since he has been here and now loves everyone he meets. Blade has been fine around other dogs here.
(26) Flopsy: Flopsy is a beautiful pit girl who is 2-3 years old and weighs 55 lbs. Flopsy got her name because when you go to pet her, she flops on the ground wanting all the belly rubs you will give her. She loves people and has a very loving personality. This sweet girl has never shown any type of aggression, and she seems to be OK with other dogs. Intake date: 3/8/24.
