Russ Newman is a man full of surprises. First, it’s surprising to learn that the former Highland County commissioner is 80-years-old; secondly, it’s surprising to learn about his six-day-a-week fitness routine that could easily tire someone half his age.
“My number one job is to take care of myself,” said Newman, during a recent pause in his daily workouts at the Highland County Family YMCA, located at 201 Diamond Drive in Hillsboro.
“Back 13 years ago, I had a desk job and I knew that I had to get more active to stay healthy as I moved into the next phase of my life, retirement.”
Newman arrives for his daily workouts at the Y between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. each morning. “Exercising keeps you young,” he said. “It doesn’t matter what the weather is like, I am going to the Y each day to work hard and see my friends. Inside this great building, conditions are always perfect.”
According to research by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), older adults who are inactive lose ground in four areas that are important for staying healthy and independent: endurance, strength, balance, and flexibility.
Research suggests that you can maintain or at least partially restore these four areas through exercise and physical activity and that doing so improves fitness.
Active Older Adults (AOA) in the YMCA experience a strong sense of belongingness and a network of friends who provide supportive communities for sustained health and well-being.
Through on-going, fun, safe, and engaging programs, activities, and events AOA members increase their self-confidence and sense of achievement while building relationships and celebrating the success and milestones of each older adult within their AOA community. For more information about the Highland County Family YMCA, call (937) 840-9622 or visit the website www.HighlandCountyYMCA.org.
