The OAFP Foundation (Foundation) is pleased to announce that Mary E. Krebs, MD, FAAFP, of Xenia is the recipient of the 2020 Family Physician Mentorship Award.
The Foundation annually presents the Family Physician Mentorship Award to recognize a community-based Ohio family physician who, as a preceptor, has exhibited exemplary qualities and characteristics of mentorship excellence.
Dr. Krebs practices family medicine as a solo physician at a rural federally qualified health center (FQHC) in Lebanon. In addition to caring for her patients, Dr. Krebs teaches residents and medical students at Soin Medical Center in Beavercreek.
She has also developed the practice management curriculum for a new residency program and is focused on the patient-centered medical home (PCMH) and quality improvement.
Her completed projects include efforts to improve diabetes care and preventive health, decrease emergency department and hospital utilization, improve care coordination, address population health, measure physician quality, and deliver medical neighborhood care within the context of the PCMH model. Dr. Krebs is frequently consulted on matters relating to quality measures, population health, lifestyle modification, value-based payment, and diabetes.
Dr. Krebs volunteers her time to the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians (OAFP) by serving on a number of workgroups and committees in a variety of leadership positions. She is also a contributor to The Ohio Family Physician and has written on a variety of public health issues.
When asked about her experience mentoring students, Dr. Krebs shared that “It is incredibly rewarding to watch students develop. I have had the privilege of teaching students at all different levels; this is a great chance for them to see the importance of continuity of care, and I believe [it] has contributed to their choice of family medicine.”
Dr. Krebs is highly valued by her patients, colleagues, and students. According to nominator Melanie Biegler, OMSII, “From the start, Dr. Krebs has challenged me and has shaped my clinical thinking and ability to provide a concise and thoughtful oral presentation. She takes every moment she can as a teaching moment. She provides adequate constructive feedback in a way that not only allows me to understand what my mistakes are, but how to better my skills when the situation presents itself again. She is always quick to answer my questions and provide additional commentary if I am unable to fully grasp a concept.”
“It is clear how important Dr. Krebs is to her patients, and it has been helpful to watch how she approaches different situations, as I learn how to take a detailed history and provide an assessment and plan. I hope to exemplify her kind and supportive demeanor as I advocate for my patients in the future. This year, Dr. Krebs has played a huge role in helping me decide what kind of physician I what to be. I will be forever grateful for her advice, how far she has pushed me, and her support as I enter my third year of medical school,” continued Ms. Biegler.
Dr. Krebs earned her medical degree from The Ohio State University and completed her family medicine residency at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton. Dr. Krebs was recognized during the virtual Family Medicine Party held on August 7.
