Crowds enjoy 30th annual Leesburg Luminaria

Lead Summary
By
Jay Newland-
The 30th annual Luminaria was enjoyed by many folks who came to town to enjoy the lighted candle displays along the streets in downtown Leesburg and throughout the village. The Leesburg Lions Club sponsors this event on the second Sunday in December.

The downtown businesses hosted open houses during this Sunday evening, and there were bags of popcorn, donuts, candy, cookies, coffee, hot chocolate, juices and peanuts available. The children and adults walked the sidewalks from business to business, visiting with each other and enjoying the tasty treats offered.

One couple crossing the street said, “It’s a perfect evening for this event.” The air was cold outside, but going into the businesses to warm up, you could find folks to visit with.

There were wagon rides, which toured the village to show off the lighted displays. The tractors included a John Deere from Five Points Implement in Hillsboro, a New Holland from Baxla Tractor Sales of Washington Court House and a Kubota from Moon Tractor in Hillsboro.

Santa Claus arrived at Square One, and a line of children gave him their Christmas lists and received candy. There was Christmas music played by Sean Poole for enjoyment by those waiting to see Santa.

A royal court was recognized at the library, and the winners were given a ride around Leesburg in a decorated wagon. The evening ended with a community service at the Leesburg Church of Christ.

The winners of the Luminaria decoration contest were selected by Lions Club District Governor Lydia Houser.
