Sardinia American Legion
Auxiliary Unit 755 holds
annual poppy distribution
Members of the Sardinia American Legion Auxiliary Unit 755 invite the
public to honor fallen warriors and contribute to the continuing needs of
area veterans by wearing a red poppy for Memorial Day.
Members of the Auxiliary and Legion will be at Tanker's Truck Stop,
Tractor Supply, Family Dollar, 1st Stop and the Sardinia Fuel Mart from 10
a.m.-6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, May 26-27, to accept donations and hand
out the poppies.
All donations go directly to help veterans, the military and their
families.
World War II veteran
John T. Howsman to
celebrate 100th birthday
World War II veteran John T. Howsman will celebrate his 100th birthday
at an open house in his honor from 2-5 p.m. Saturday, June 10 in the
Leesburg Community Room (firehouse). His birthday is June 15. Mr. Howsman
served under Gen. George Patton in the U.S. Army's 128th Anti-Aircraft
Artillery Gun Battalion.

Coach Veidt's
Commitment Baseball
School June 5-8
Commitment Baseball School with Coach Chris Veidt will be offered at
Hillsboro¹s Shaffer Park, June 5-8 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. daily. The camp is
open to boys and girls ages 6-14 and is designed to provide each camper with
the fundamentals of hitting, pitching, catching, base running and defense.
Preregistration (by Sunday, June 5) is $75 ($50 for each additional

The Southern Ohio Educational Service Center Governing Board will have
its regular meeting Tuesday, June 20 at 7 p.m. at the Region 14/Hopewell
Office, 5350 W. New Market Rd., Hillsboro. This is a change in date and

Sinking Spring School
alumni celebration
The annual Sinking Spring School alumni celebration will be held
Saturday, June 10. All graduates, attending students, former teachers,
cafeteria workers, custodians, bus drivers and anyone else who contribute to
the outstanding education students received at their beloved school are
invited to attend.
The social hour is from 4-6 p.m. Dinner will be a catered buffet served
at 6:30 p.m.
The cost of the meal will be $12 per person, and reservations may be
sent to Nina Couser, 2479 state Route 41, Hillsboro, Ohio 45133 or to the
Sinking Spring Alumni Association, Box 5, Sinking Spring, Ohio 45172.

The Hillsboro Records Commission will meet Tuesday, June 27 at 1 p.m. at
130 North High St. for their semi-annual meeting.
Hillsboro kindergarten
Children living in Hillsboro City School District who will be 5 years of
age on or before Aug. 1 are eligible to enroll in kindergarten. Children who
will be 6 years of age on or before Aug. 1 must be enrolled in school under
Ohio law. Hillsboro's kindergarten is an all-day program. The registration
process begins with entering all information on Final Forms prior to June 7.

Items that need to be uploaded to the Final Forms platform include:
certified copy of the child¹s birth certificate, child¹s Social Security
card, proof of residence (current utility bill with name and address),
parent's driver's license and custody papers, if applicable. Completing
online registration forms prior to June 7 will expedite the registration
process. However, if you are unable to complete online registration, please
bring all documentation on June 7.
State law requires that no pupil shall be admitted to school at the time
of initial entry unless the child has been immunized against polio,
diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), hepatitis
B and varicella (chickenpox). All students entering kindergarten must
receive two doses of the varicella vaccine or present written documentation
by a doctor or parent stating when the child had the disease. In-person
registration will be Wednesday, June 7 at Hillsboro Elementary School.
Registration will be open from 9-11:30 a.m. to register those children whose
last name begins with letters A-L and from 1-3:30 p.m. with last names
beginning with the letters M-Z. In-person registration includes dental,
vision, speech and hearing evaluations and the Health Department to provide
immunizations.

SOGS events
The Southern Ohio Genealogical Society is participating in the Saturday, May
20 Highland County History Day event at the Hillsboro Library. The event
will begin at 10 a.m., when the library opens, and conclude at 3 p.m., when
the library closes. The special speaker will be John Cooper as Abraham
Lincoln. The schedule is as follows: 10 a.m. local trivia; 11 a.m. Women
of Highland County; noon Civil War reenactors; 1 p.m. Abe Lincoln; and 2
p.m. announcement of prizes.
Leesburg notices
The Village of Leesburg is conducting fire hydrant flushing during the
week of May 22. During this time, your water may appear rusty. Avoid washing
light-colored clothing.
Leesburg Village Council's meeting day has been changed to the fourth
Thursday for May only. The council meeting will be held May 25 at 6 p.m.
Prior to the regular council meeting, the ad hoc committee will be meeting
at 5 p.m. The topic of that meeting is the employee handbook.
St. Vincent de Paul Society
The St. Vincent de Paul Society of Hillsboro will be offering two
Outreach Days during the month of May at the St. Mary's Catholic Church
Parish Hall at 119 E. Walnut St in Hillsboro. The Outreach Days provide an
opportunity for individuals and families who are seeking assistance to meet
with SVdP volunteers to discuss their issues and needs. The Outreach Days
will be held on Saturday, May 13 from 11 a.m.- 1 p.m. and on Wednesday, May
24 from 6-7:30 p.m.
Outreach Days are held at these times every month on the second Saturday
and the fourth Wednesday. Individuals/families are seen on a first-come,

Aralyn's Turtley
Awesome Event
Aralyn's Turtley Awesome Event, a benefit for Aralyn's Alliance, will be
held June 2 from 6-11 p.m. at the Lake View Loft, located at 10215 Jones
Road, Hillsboro. All proceeds will go to the family of Aralyn Slack, a
10-year-old from Lynchburg who is fighting DIPG, a terminal, aggressive form
of brain cancer.
The event will include catered food with a cash donation bar; split the
pot and raffle items; and a silent auction including a quarter beef, Yeti
cooler filled with liquor, a gun raffle and more. There will also be a
bouncy house, "dunk a trucker dunk tank" and face painting. A concert
featuring Filo Beddoe will begin at 8 p.m.
There will be a semi truck parade from Hillsboro to the Lake View Loft,
with Aralyn arriving in Pinky 1 at 7:45 p.m. For questions or donations,

Buford Alumni Dinner May 27
The annual Buford Alumni Dinner will be held Saturday, May 27 at the
Pricetown Church of Christ Fellowship Hall, 2070 SR 131, Hillsboro. All
former graduates and students of Buford High School and Elementary School
and their guests are invited to attend. The classes of 1948, 1953, 1958 and
1963 will be recognized and honored.
There is ample parking and wheelchair accessibility at the church.
Social hour begins at 6 p.m. A buffet dinner by Mona Lisa's Restaurant
will be served at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $12 per person. Reservations may be

Altrusa of Highland County
sponsoring golf tournament
Altrusa of Highland County is sponsoring a golf tournament in memory of
longtime club member Nancy Graves.
It will be held on Saturday, June 3 at Buckeye Hills Golf Course and
Country Club. Altrusa is an international nonprofit organization which
focuses on making our communities better through leadership and service with
goals to enhance literacy for everyone. This one-time golf tournament will
help Altrusa raise the funds needed to continue the literacy projects that
Graves felt so strongly about. Any support you can give would be greatly

Country Quilters are planning their annual quilt show, Quilts of

HUBA meetings
The Hillsboro Uptown Business Association (HUBA) is a 501(c)(3)
charitable organization with a mission statement of nurturing and assisting
the growth, improvement and expansion of both existing and new businesses
and services offered in the general uptown Hillsboro area, with a main focus
of bringing merchants into uptown Hillsboro. HUBA meetings are held at 8:30
a.m. at the Highland County Administration Building in the basement room.
The dates for the 2023 meetings are: June 13, July 11, Aug. 8, Sept. 12,
Oct. 10 and Nov. 14. Anyone who has a business or is interested in starting
a business is welcome to join HUBA at a meeting.
Senior food donations
The Highland County Church of Christ is giving out senior food boxes on
the third Friday of each month. These are boxes of canned and shelf-stable
items, plus cheese. To qualify, you must be age 60 or older; submit an
income form (to be filled out one time); and pick up your food box between
11 a.m.-1 p.m. on the third Friday of each month at 6670 U.S. Route 50 West,
Hillsboro.

The Highland County Community Action Organization Governing Board will
meet in 2023 on the following dates: May 23, June 27, July 25, Aug. 22,
Sept. 26, Oct. 24, Nov. 28 and Dec. 26.
Brushcreek Township
trustees' meetings
The Highland County Brushcreek Township Trustees will hold the 2023
meetings for the entire fiscal year on the first and third Thursday of each
month at 7 p.m. The meetings are open to the public and will be held at 7 N.
Chestnut Street, Sinking Spring 45172.
HDH Board meetings
The Highland District Hospital Board of Governors meetings for 2023 will
be held on the last Wednesday of each month, January-November, at 7 p.m. in
the Education Room at Highland District Hospital. Meeting schedules for
specific committees can be obtained by contacting Melinda Russell at (937)

Hillsboro meetings
The City of Hillsboro has issued the following meeting schedule for
2023.
• City Council meets the Thursday after the second Monday of the month
at 7 p.m. at the Municipal Courtroom.
• The Planning Commission meets the third Monday of the month at 5:30
p.m. in the old firehouse on Governor Trimble Place.
• The Revolving Loan Fund committee has quarterly meetings scheduled for
the following dates: May 17, Aug. 16 and Nov. 15. Meetings are held at the
City Building at 10 a.m.
• The Community Improvement Corporation meets the second Wednesday of
the month at 9 a.m. at the City Building.
• Meetings for the Records Commission and Civil Service Commission are
TBA.
Changes in schedule or special meetings must be published a minimum of
24 hours prior to meeting time.
Reformers Unanimous
Reformers Unanimous offers Christian support for all types of addiction

The Lynchburg Historical Society will be open on Tuesdays from 10 a.m.-2

New Life Church & Ministries
resumes food giveaway
New Life Church & Ministries, located at 6101 S.R. 247 in Hillsboro, has
resumed its weekly food giveaway. The food pantry will be offered every
Friday from 1-4 p.m. Individuals are asked to wait until after 10 a.m. at
the absolute earliest to get in line for the food giveaways.
St. Vincent de Paul Society
The St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Mary Catholic Church in Hillsboro
will conduct outreach sessions on the second Saturday of each month at St.
Mary Parish Hall, 119 E. Walnut St. in Hillsboro from 10 a.m.-noon.
Volunteers will be available to meet with neighbors seeking assistance on a
first-come, first-serve basis. SVdP will no longer be holding the additional
outreach day at Samaritan Outreach each month. Please bring proof of income
