Buford Farmers’ Institute
set for Friday, Feb. 25
It is once again time for the Buford Farmers’ Institute. This year will
be the 107th year for the event. The Farmers’ Institute is one of only six
left in Ohio and the only one in southern Ohio.
The Institute will be held on Friday, Feb. 25 at the Clay Township Park
building (the old Buford school) at 7 p.m. The Clay Township Park will be
serving a ham dinner, sandwiches, and desserts from 4-6 p.m. in the gym. The
entertainment this year will be the Face Off Band. There will be an auction
of baked goods and produce held throughout the evening. All proceeds from
the auction go to the Farmers’ Institute.
Kiwanis soup supper
will be held March 12
The annual Kiwanis soup supper will be held March 12 in the Commission on
Aging building, 1179 S. Elm St., Washington C.H., from 4:30-7 p.m. The meal
costs $6 for adults and $3 for children under 10.
Local musicians tune up for 'zombie' concert Feb. 26 in Greenfield
Local musicians Chuck Day, Derek Current, Matt Kepler, and Eric Wilburn will
be bringing their band, Leroy, to the VFW Ranch in Greenfield on Saturday,
Feb. 26. Leroy will be one of nine bands playing in the Zombie Apocalypse Party.
The rock and roll concert begins at 4 p.m. and continues until 1 a.m.
Tickets are $7 at the door and are $5 if you are dressed as a zombie. Or,
you can ask for the zombie special effects booth at the concert and receive
discounted tickets.
Leroy features Day and Current on vocals; Kepler on bass; and Wilburn on
drums. Day also plays drums, and Current also plays guitar. They will be
playing some of their original music and popular rock and roll classics.
The VFW Ranch is located 12868 Watt Road in Greenfield.
Greenfield merchants
host wedding giveaway
The Greenfield Area Merchants Association is sponsoring a February
Valentine wedding giveaway. The drawing will take place on Feb. 28. Once the
winner is announced, the date will be planned, subject to the availability
of all the donors. This wedding offer will expire Aug. 30.
This wedding giveaway is valued at $1,200, and the event will be held at
the Yellow Rose Bed and Breakfast. The Yellow Rose will provide free venue
setup/take down, seating for up to 14 guests, one night’s stay for the
newlyweds in the Cattle Baron’s Suite, and their first breakfast as a couple
on the next day. The package also includes flowers, wedding decorations,
wedding cake, anniversary cake, punch, and a picture CD of the wedding
event. In addition to the Yellow Rose, the following Greenfield merchants
have provided donations: Poor Man’s Photography, Robbins Village Florist,
Bev McPherson, Ivy & Twigs, and Community Markets.

Open Door meal Feb. 26
The Open Door free meal will be held at the Greenfield Methodist Church
on Saturday, Feb. 26. Serving will be from 4-5:30 p.m. The menu will be
lasagna, salad, garlic bread, and apple sauce. Everyone is welcome.
VFW Post 9094
dinner Feb. 25
VFW Post 9094 will host a ham and bean dinner on Friday, Feb. 25 from
4:30-7 p.m. All-you-can-eat ham and beans, fried potatoes, cornbread, and
drinks will be served for $6 per person.
Mammogram screenings
March 11 at Health Dept.
Current recommendations are that every woman over the age of 40 receives
an annual mammogram to assist in detecting breast cancer early. Thanks to a
generous grant from the Susan G. Komen Foundation and Mercy Hospitals, women
in the Highland County area now have the opportunity to receive a mammogram
at no cost. On Friday, March 11, Mercy Hospital’s mobile unit will be
providing mammogram screenings at the Highland County Health Department from
10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance will be
billed. However, patients will not be responsible for any deductibles,
co-pays, or out-of-pocket expenses. Uninsured patients are also eligible to

Dr. Nelson to sign
copies of book March 10
Dr. Howard Nelson, interim pastor at Faith Community Church, will sign
copies of his new book at the Hillsboro Book and Bible store on March 10
from noon to 5 p.m. Dr. Nelson and his family were missionaries in Africa
from 1969-87.
Dr. Nelson’s book, “Mokolo,” is the story of a young Congolese man who
discovers that choosing to serve God is never an easy decision. Inspired by
his own experiences in Africa, the book depicts the culture and lifestyle of
those living in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Sportsmen dinner Feb. 25
The Cowan Lake Association of Sportsmen (CLASS), located at 331

Spring concerts
at The Barn
Southern Ohio’s concert showplace, The Fling Barn, welcomes two popular
performers to usher in The Barn’s 2011 spring concert series. On April 23,
David Rhodes Brown returns to The Barn, and on May 12, the Kentucky
Headhunters perform at the Folsom events center.
