Commissioners recognize May as Older Americans Month

Highland County Commissioners Shane Wilkin, Tom Horst and Jeremy Shaffer signed a proclamation Wednesday, May 14 for Older Americans Month.

Representing the District 7 Area Agency on Aging were Jenni Dovyak-Lewis and board member John King. Representing the Highland County Senior Citizens Center were Mechell Frost and several center volunteers.

Lewis updated commissioners on the home and community based services provided through AAA7 in 10 southern Ohio counties. She also provided this year's annual report to the board and informed commissioners that 514 Highland County residents are being served by the agency.

"We can help people learn of the the services available, including in-home services, PASSPORT and the Ohio Home Care Waiver," Lewis said.
 
"The Ohio Home Care Waiver is a program CareSource has partnered with the local Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) in Southeast Ohio (Districts 7, 8 and 9) for those under 60 years of age."

The Area Agency on Aging District 7, Inc. administers programs for the elderly funded by the state and federal governments. Federal funds under the Older Americans Act and the Health Care Financing Administration, as well as all state funds, are received through the Ohio Department of Aging.

The Agency contracts with agencies and then channels funds through this network of service providers. These agency providers include senior centers, community action agencies, home health agencies, health departments, etc.

The Area Agency on Aging District 7, Inc. (AAA7) consists of the following ten counties: Adams, Brown, Gallia, Highland, Jackson, Lawrence, Pike, Ross, Scioto, and Vinton.
AAA7’s main office is on the campus of University of Rio Grande, Ohio, with satellite offices in Wheelersburg, Waverly and West Union, Ohio.

Frost thanked several volunteers at the Highland County Senior Citizens Center who were in attendance, including Donna Sizemore-Haynes, Juanita Kelley, Howard Kelley, Ruth Crabtree, Richard Crabtree, Jeannette Knauff and Eloise Garrison. The volunteers also thanked Frost for her service at the center.
