CHECK IT OUT: Sign up for a library card this September
September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and the staff at the Leesburg Library would like to remind parents that your children need to have the “smartest card” in their wallets – a library card. Please bring your children to the front desk and sign them up for a card if they don’t already have one. The only requirement is that their parent must have a library card in good standing within the Highland County System.
If a parent needs a card, we will be happy to oblige. Bring in a picture ID and one other piece of identification showing your current address. That’s all it takes.
To encourage our young patrons to have and use their library cards, every time kids and teens use their cards to check out items during the month of September, they can enter to win a prize drawing! Come in and get the details at our front desk.
Other activities this month include our Knit Together group. They meet every Thursday from 5:30-7 p.m. New knitters are always welcome.

Our story times resume on Thursday, Sept. 11 and continue every Thursday morning. Wee Ones (age 6-36 months) meet at 10 a.m. for a time of songs, rhymes and stories. Tater Tots (age 3-5 years) meet at 10:30 a.m. for songs, finger plays, flannel board activities, stories and crafts. Stop by our front desk to pick up a booklet that includes this year’s dates, themes and more information. Topics this month include Welcome to Story Time, Happy Birthday Johnny Appleseed and Splish, Splash.
Our teen book group, SPARX, will meet on Thursday, Sept. 11 at 5:30 p.m. All Leesburg-area teens grades seven and up are invited to participate. The books being discussed are "Dragon’s Keep" by Janet Lee Carey and "One Moment" by Kristina McBride. Join Ashley for some food and fun.
RRR book group will meet on Thursday, Sept. 18 at 1:30 p.m. The group is looking for new members, so please feel free to ask for more details at our front desk. The book being discussed is "Under a Wide and Starry Sky."
The Highland County libraries will be closed on Monday, Sept. 1 in observance of the Labor Day holiday. Please feel free to use our outside book drop to return items.
We also want to congratulate our participants in the Egg Drop Contest that we held as part of our summer reading program.
The object of the contest was to design a protective container to hold a raw egg that was then dropped from heights of 10 feet, 15 feet and finally 23 feet. After each height, the eggs were checked for survivability. The containers were also judged on creativity and proximity to the target zone when dropped.
Our 4-5 year old participants were: Lydia Hamilton (first place) and Griffin Friend (second place). Our 6-7 year old participants included: Halle Jones (first place), Mya Hamilton (second place) and Ava Hooper (third place). Our 8-9 year old group included: Lottie Evans (first place), Sydney Hooper (second place), Campbell Anne Friend (third place), Ethan Fetters (Honorable Mention), Larkin Friend and Abby Smith. Our 10 years and older entrant was Nick Evans (first place).
Winners received a free pass to COSI.
Thanks to Blair Aukeman for being the official egg dropper and Weller’s Plumbing & Heating for the use of their scissors lift. All in all, it was a very “egg”citing day at the Leesburg Library.
