CHECK IT OUT: Holiday season festivities begin at Leesburg Library

Lead Summary
By
Sharon Aukeman-

October is the start of our busy holiday season here at the Leesburg Library.

We hope our young readers ages 2 through sixth grade will sign up for our Polar Express Reading Program starting on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Each time readers check out ten items from Oct. 1 through Nov. 25, they will receive a train ticket to enter into a prize drawing. They are then encouraged to attend our Polar Express Experience on Saturday, Dec. 6. They can hop on board the Leesburg Library Polar Express Train and participate in a life-size board game, where they will stop along the way to the North Pole for goodies and prizes.

A drawing will also be held (from the train ticket entries) on Dec. 6, and several lucky readers will win Christmas gift cards. Complete details will be given upon registration.

We will be having a pumpkin decorating contest this month for patrons of all ages. Pick up a mini pumpkin (cost is 50 cents) at the front desk starting on Oct. 1 and decorate it using any medium (paint, markers, feathers, etc.) you choose. Write your name and phone number on the bottom of the pumpkin and turn it in by Friday, Oct. 24. Prizes will be awarded.

Knit Together continues to meet on Thursday evenings from 5:30-7 p.m. Feel free to join the fun. The library will be closed on Monday, Oct. 13 in observance of Columbus Day. Please use our outdoor book drop to return items.

Our Sparx Teen Book Group will meet on Thursday, Oct. 9 from 5:30-7 p.m. Join us for food, frightfully good fun and a flick. The book being discussed is "Mockingjay" by Suzanne Collins. All Leesburg area teens in the seventh grade and up are invited to attend.

Our adult book group, RRR, will be having a lunch outing this month at Alley 21 on Thursday, Oct. 16. Members are to meet at the restaurant at 11:30 a.m. Books being discussed in November and December are “reader’s choice.”

We hope you will be able to Trick or Treat with us on Thursday, Oct. 30 from 6-7 p.m. Please note that we are closed during the last hour of Beggars' Night, so if you want to get some treats from the library, you will need to arrive prior to 7 p.m.

Story times continue at 10 a.m. for Wee Ones and 10:30 a.m. for Tater Tots. Our themes this month include Celebrate Pizza, Fire Prevention, Make a Difference Day, The Color Purple and Happy Halloween. Stop by our front desk or call us with questions about our fun story times.

We look forward to your stopping by the Leesburg Library to pick up a spine-chilling read, an intense horror movie or a book on fall crafts during the month of October. See you soon.
