Chatfield students host successful fall festival

Chatfield College’s Student Service Club (CSSC) hosted a family-friendly event Saturday, Oct. 27 at the St. Martin campus in Brown County. In only its second year, the Fall Festival was a huge success.
More than 250 people ventured to Chatfield’s historic Brown County campus on a cold, rainy day to enjoy hay rides, pumpkin painting, a trunk-or-treat, a Fortnight tournament, a sampling of delicious food and more.

“In just our second year, we were really impressed with the turnout and the community support for this event. We are excited to continue to share our campus with the public through events like this,” CSSC president Hunter Ellis said.
The Fall Festival was planned and organized by CSSC, with supervision of its on-campus staff advisor, Brianna Houchens. The students devised a budget, sold sponsorships and merchandise, recruited volunteers and managed operations the day of the event. In addition to the support of generous sponsors, funds used to underwrite the costs of this event were also raised solely by the group through projects like campus lunches.
“I am very proud of the dedication and organization of this group to make the Fall Festival a big success. CSSC provides a great opportunity for students to gain real-world skills, like event planning and public relations, to name a few, that they can take with them after graduating from college,” Houchens said.
“I think it was great that the whole event was student-led. We had a lot of fun planning it, and it was satisfying to see our hard work come to fruition, too,” first-year CSSC member Jade West said.
CSSC was one of the first clubs formed on campus and now has more than 15 members. The mission of this club is to provide students with volunteering opportunities through activities in the communities surrounding Chatfield, while also serving the student body with various lunches, fundraising activities, campus clean-up projects and more. Previous service projects of the group include weekly visits to Ohio Veterans Home in Georgetown, toy donations to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Hope Emergency in Lynchburg, volunteering at the Freestore Food Bank and donations to several other community organizations like the Brown County Animal Shelter and Matthew 25 Ministries.
The group will be donating 25 percent of the profits from this event back to the college. Through their donations, they plan to start an Improvement Fund, which includes plans to refurbish the tennis court, staff a coffee shop for students and build a board game shelf. Another 25 percent will be used to buy Christmas gifts for families in need through Hope Emergency. The remaining 50 percent will go to help fund the fall festival in future years.
