Celebrating the impact of older Ohioans and OSHIIP on Senior Citizens Day

Judith L. French-
Celebrated annually on Aug. 21, Senior Citizens Day is an opportunity for us to honor and give gratitude to older Ohioans for their contributions through the years.

Over their lifetimes, older Ohioans have made their families, friends, and communities stronger through connection and engagement. That same type of commitment and spirit is what our Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program works to give back to older Ohioans.

Launched in 1992, OSHIIP is the state's official Medicare education and coverage evaluation resource and is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year of helping older Ohioans navigate Medicare. More than two million Ohioans are on Medicare and thousands of people become eligible for the federal health insurance program each month.

OSHIIP staff, trained and certified volunteers, many of whom are older Ohioans, and community organization partners engage older Ohioans virtually and in communities across the state, including for OSHIIP's Medicare Check-up Day events, which are about to begin.

Held around Medicare's annual open enrollment period, Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, the events involve OSHIIP helping older Ohioans evaluate suitable Medicare coverage options, prescription drug plans, supplemental insurance, financial assistance opportunities and other health insurance considerations.

OSHIIP's services have been in demand. Over the last year, OSHIIP saved more than $25.6 million for Ohioans on Medicare. And OSHIIP is more than excited to be there for older Ohioans during open enrollment.

Medicare will release its 2023 plan information on Oct. 1 at www.medicare.gov. Coverage and cost evaluation is imperative because Medicare plans can change. Plans may have different benefits, out-of-pocket costs, covered prescription drugs, in-network physicians and premiums than the year before.

For more information about OSHIIP's virtual and in-person Medicare Check-up Day events, and to register, visit www.insurance.ohio.gov. OSHIIP staff is available at 800-686-1578 and OSHIIPmail@insurance.ohio.gov Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., to answer Medicare questions.
