The entire time I have lived in the area, I have repeatedly heard phrases like, “Well, there's nothing to do here.”

This past Saturday night would prove to be quite the disclaimer.

For example:

• The "We Love Hillsboro" fall celebration was held at the Hillsboro First United Methodist Church, with games, food, bouncy rides and a cake walk.

• The Highland County Historical Society Log Cabin Bean Supper was held Saturday. The Log Cabin Cookout has been a popular fall activity for the society for moor than 20 years. The log cabin owned by the Highland County Historical Society was originally built around 1830 by George Robison along Mad River Road near New Market. The house was donated to the Society by the Curtis Wilson family in 1980.

• The Historical Society supper was followed with an auction of paintings of local barns by Robert Kroeger of Cincinnati; the raffle of a quilt by Jeannette Knauff, which was won by Mickey Parrott of The Highland County Press; and the presence of a Civil War re-enactor, Donald Owens. Senator Rob Portman, campaigning in the area, joined the group to tour the museum and thank the Society for what it does in the community. Senator Portman took time to visit with Society members and view the artwork that was being auctioned off as a fundraiser after the dinner. Twelve paintings, including a painting of the museum and log cabin, and a small quilt were auctioned.

• Samaritan Outreach Services held its gala with Motown Band and provided food, fun and dancing.

• Several Highland Countians were involved in an Emmaus Walk retreat in Wilmington.

• All these events were in addition to local options for bowling, laser tag and movies, plus favorite pastimes of eating out and shopping were, of course, available as usual.

Fun, fellowship and service opportunities were plentiful for the enjoying in our community last weekend and there just seemed to be a resulting glow around the city.

Not so different than usual, perhaps, but a bit more plentiful. Let's just keep on...
