Bright Elementary 3rd grader brightens spirits through bookmark project

A local third grader is endeavoring to brighten the spirits of those feeling the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, as she is designing and mailing bookmarks to spread cheer in a time of widespread stress.
Kenley Juillerat, 9, is the daughter of Klayton and Kara Juillerat of Mowrystown. She is a student at Bright Elementary.
“I’m making bookmarks for shut-ins and people who are kind of down-spirited,” Kenley told The Highland County Press. “I like making bracelets, and I started to make a bookmark and thought of the idea. I asked my mom if I could make a video and put it on Facebook and she said sure, so that’s how it basically happened.”
Kenley said she came up with the idea for the project as a creative outlet, as schools are currently closed until May due to the pandemic. Her mom said that Kenley takes care of farm animals and other chores around the house in addition to keeping up with her studies, “but she keeps going back to this project that she really is enjoying.”
“I make the bookmark, and I make these little cards to go with them and tape them on there,” Kenley said. “It says like ‘have a good day’ and then I put a stamp on it and say who it’s from and who it’s to. I put on a Bible verse on some of them.
“I like doing my schoolwork, but it gives me something to do besides all of that.”
Kenley just started the project but has already sent four bookmarks in the mail. She’s mailed packages to Cincinnati, Mount Orab and Mowrystown, but she’s willing to send them “all over America,” she said.
She’s also enlisted the help of both parents, with her mom organizing requests for bookmarks and her dad in charge of mailing them, although Kenley is paying for the postage herself.
To request a bookmark for yourself or a loved one, contact Kara Juillerat through Facebook messenger or by email at karajuillerat@gmail.com. Kenley has received some donations of art supplies for making the bookmarks, so her mom also can be contacted if you are interested in making a contribution.
Kenley asked that you include the name and address of the person receiving the bookmark, and her mom will forward the requests to her. She added that she hopes that this fun project can bring joy to others.
