Behind the Business: Field of Dreams
Many people dream of quitting their 9-5 job in the corporate abyss to pursue something that stimulates them on a higher level. Local craftswoman and Chamber member Letty Allen did just that and has been thriving in a creative environment ever since.
For 24 years, Allen has been shaping and adapting the family business into something that holds true to the past while blending new ideas and styles with the classics.
Many locals will remember Allen from the time she spent with her mother in their shop located in downtown Hillsboro. The store was a hodgepodge of home decor with used books and antiques throughout the store, and Allen specializing in framing. The store was a family affair, and Allen fondly remembers her then-toddler daughter, Lauren, taking naps in her basket on the framing room floor while she worked on framing orders.
In 2000, Allen’s mother retired, and the store in downtown Hillsboro closed its doors. But that wasn’t going to slow down Allen. She decided to move the store out to her home on Mad River Road by renovating an old chicken coop.
Measuring 28×48, the old coop is now refurbished and resembles something one would find in Better Homes & Gardens. The shop, Field of Dreams, encompasses many of Allen’s hobbies all in one place. While she still frames, the shop also includes repurposed “shabby chic” decor.
Allen commented, “I want young professionals and older adults alike to be able to come into my store and find something that they like. My daughter recently moved into her own apartment and was able to furnish it using pieces from Field of Dreams. It is quality pieces at a price that won’t break the bank.”
The store is also the home base for “Paint-N-Party’s,” which have gained popularity in recent years. For just $30 per person, Allen will buy all the necessary supplies for you and a group of friends to come and eat, drink and paint your heart out, or she will bring the party to you. There is no artistic experience necessary, just the will to have a good time.
