Annual Ghost Walk held at Hillsboro Cemetery

More than a hundred area residents paid a visit to the Hillsboro Cemetery on a warm, autumn evening Thursday, Sept. 25 as the Highland County Historical Society hosted a Ghost Walk.

Local historian Jean Wallis presented the history of the Hillsboro Cemetery before the characters of Charles and Mary Rainey, 2nd Lt. Caspar Collins, Christopher Arthur, Jane Allen Trimble and the Harsha family were showcased.

Mel Haines, a retired teacher, represented his great-grandparents, Charles and Mary Rainey West, who operated a store in Rainsboro.

Steve Roush presented 2nd Lt. Caspar Collins, who died at the age of 20 in the July 26, 1865 Battle of Platte Bridge in what is now the state of Wyoming.

Dwight Crum represented Christopher Arthur, a native of Lynchburg, Va. and the builder of the Highland County Courthouse.

Jami Holland presented Jane Allen Trimble, the mother of former Ohio Gov. Allen Trimble, and Justin Harsha told the story of the Harsha Monument Company, which was founded 160 years ago.

“I was really pleased with the turnout,” Wallis said. “The weather was beautiful, and everyone who portrayed the ghosts did a great job.”

Wallis added that the Highland County Historical Society plans to host another Ghost Walk toward the end of September next year.
